What is an Endorsement?
In Texas, high school students choose one of five Endorsements—Business & Industry, Public Service, Arts & Humanities, STEM, or Multidisciplinary Studies. Each Endorsement is a focused path of study made up of at least four related course credits, grouped by interest or skill area. These courses help students build deeper knowledge in a subject that supports their college or career goals. Students select an Endorsement at the end of 8th grade.
The 5 Endorsement categories are the same across the state, but the types of Programs of Study available—especially within Career & Technical Education (CTE)—can vary by high school, depending on what is offered on each campus.
What is a Program of Study?
A Program of Study is a sequence of Career & Technical Education (CTE) courses designed to help students explore and prepare for careers in a specific field. Each program follows a structured pathway with courses at Levels 1 through 4, allowing students to build their knowledge and skills over time.
Programs of Study are aligned with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Endorsements and meet both academic and industry standards. They incorporate essential academic, technical, and employability skills while reflecting the needs of state and local job markets. Each program includes opportunities to earn an Industry-Based Certification (IBC), gain hands-on experience, and prepare for postsecondary education or entry into the workforce.
By completing a CTE Program of Study & earning the aligned IBC, students can graduate "career ready" with a clearer sense of direction, real-world skills, and valuable credentials that give them a head start on their future.
What is an Industry Based Certification (IBC)?
An Industry-Based Certification (IBC) is a credential recognized by employers that shows a student has the skills and knowledge needed for a specific career field. High school students can earn IBCs through certain Career & Technical Education (CTE) courses, giving them a competitive edge in the workforce right after graduation. At COHS, each CTE program offers at least one opportunity to earn an IBC, helping students graduate career-ready and confident in their future path.
